Matthias'
turnings include a variety of woods, including burls, laminations,
and the basic woods of pine and fir. His specialty is incorporating
the natural resins of fir to: "leave the bark on", thus
making his fir turnings more appealing and a conversation piece
wherever they are found.
Matthias
creates artistic pieces with practical uses that enhance the work
of "Mother Nature". He describes his work as "useful
art". Matthais was a chef for 14 years before becoming a full-time
turner. He is a self-taught artist who believes his success is due
not only to hard work but due to the encouragement of other artists.
Although
Matthias does all the turning, his wife is in the finishing process,
and other aspects of Tree Fever Turnings. He recently won an award
at a woodturning competition in Calgary, AB for one of his "bark
bowls".
