K.A.M.P – Kootenay Association of Musical Performers
This is an informal organization of mostly acoustic musicians who desire to perform for “mature” audiences. Although it is a relatively informal organization it does have the following vision, Mission Statement, Goals and Objectives.
The
organization has been in operation for around four months and has been conducting
regular (K.A.M.P.ing) sessions at Ali Baba’s Lounge in Finnegan’s Pub in Cranbrook.
The sessions are every Friday night (TGIF) from 6pm to 10 pm and, if
the music and audience are in high gear, it goes to whenever. Although
here have been some quiet evenings, the momentum is building and it is becoming
the place for acoustic music in the area. So, fellow musicians, if you
want an opportunity to perform get your name on the list by contacting the following

Registration for the 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will open in late May. At long last we will be launching online registration, but traditional snail-mail will still be available for those who want it. (Entrants will still mail in their manuscripts the old-fashioned way. Sorry to those that grumble about this! We do have our reasons.) We’ve also got a new mailing address in the works, since we’re getting too old and wheezy to carry boxes of manuscripts up and down the stairs. We’ll keep you posted on our new coordinates—in the meantime, our good friends at Geist and Arsenal Pulp Press will make sure we get any mail you send to our old address. Save the date! The 33rd Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest will take place Labour Day weekend, September 4-6, 2010 .

Kootenay Harmony Chorus sings barbershop harmony with four voice parts:
Tenor, Lead, Baritone & Bass. It's for male voices only. The contact person is Terry Leal 250-426-5036. Most barbershoppers don't read music but sing by listening. Barbershop Harmony is truly an American art form & goes back as far as the late 1800's. It was revived and saved from extinction in 1938 by a man called Owen Cash and it has flourished ever since, growing to about 30,000 members in a society that spans the globe. If you sing in the shower you can become a barbershopper. It's fun!

Chris Tyrell’s new book, Artist Survival Skills: How to Make a Living as a Canadian Visual Artist, is packed with information that every visual artist serious about her or his career should know.
Artist Survival Skills reveals the work it takes to develop an artistic career.
And whereas there are many worthwhile books for Canadian entrepreneurs on
starting and growing a small business, this primer looks at key components
of
small business theory and discusses them in the context of a creative skillsbased
small business—the self-employed Canadian visual artist.
Artist Survival Skills puts information about such things as tax law interpretation
or copyright laws as they affect visual artists, insurance potholes, how to
secure commercial representation and occupational health and safety right
in the artist's studio in one consilidated resource. As well, it addresses
the essential responsibilities of operating a small business such as bookkeeping,
inventory management, estate planning as well as instruction in effective
pricing, marketing and promotion practices.
Vancouver visual arts writer, Chris Tyrell, has been concerned about the lack
of professional support for visual artists throughout his career. He co-founded
the Alliance for Arts and Culture in Vancouver, founded the internationally
recognized gallery of photography, Presentation House Gallery in North Vancouver
and he has been writing about the life of visual artists for over twenty-two
years as editorialist for the award-winning Opus Visual Arts Newsletter.
Artist Survival Skills: How to Make a Living as a Canadian Visual Artist - 220 illustrated pages, Artist Survival Skills is kept up-to-date with posts to the website www.artistsurvivalskills.com
